Increased awareness of mental health has led many organisations and individuals to seek practical ways to support those experiencing mental health difficulties. One highly effective option is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training.

But what exactly does an MHFA course involve, who is it suitable for, and how can it make a difference in your workplace or community?

This blog outlines what you can expect from an MHFA course and how to decide whether it’s the right next step for you or your team.

What Is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a nationally recognised training course developed by Mental Health First Aid England, based on an international model that originated in Australia. The training equips participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support someone experiencing poor mental health or emotional distress.

According to MHFA England, 91% of learners say they have a better understanding of mental health following their MHFA course, and 91% believe MHFAiders® save lives (MHFA England – Our Impact).

Just like physical first aid, MHFA does not train participants to become therapists or mental health professionals. Rather, it equips them to offer initial support, listen without judgement, and guide individuals toward appropriate help when needed.

Who Is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training For?

The course is designed for any adult who wants to feel more confident in recognising signs of mental ill-health and supporting others appropriately. It is suitable for individuals in a wide range of settings, including:

  • Line managers and HR professionals
  • Team leaders and colleagues in any sector
  • Emergency services and frontline workers
  • Teachers, youth workers, and support staff
  • Volunteers and community leaders
  • Individuals supporting friends or family members
