Why does employee wellbeing matter?
A healthy workforce is a happy workforce. And a little investment goes a long way when it comes to motivating and engaging your employees. By placing your employees’ health and wellbeing as a priority, you can show that you have a commitment to improving your employees’ lives, inside and outside of work.
Employees are also the driving force behind everything you achieve. By putting wellbeing at the heart of everything you do, you also put people where they should be – at the heart of your success.

Why invest in employee wellbeing?
Mental health is now the biggest reason for employee absence, with a third of all GP absence certificates relating to ongoing, debilitating mental health conditions. A recent report published by Deloitte in 2020 estimates that poor mental health among employees costs UK employers £42bn – £45bn each year. To put this in more relatable numbers, that’s around £1700 per employee per year.
However, the same report also shows a positive case for employers to invest in the mental health of their employees, with a return of £5 for every £1 spent. Proactive mental health support, such as awareness training, is shown to have the greatest return. And in the latest 2022 report by Deloitte, those costs have increased by 25% post-pandemic to £53bn – £56 bn, the overall increase in total costs being attributable to higher turnover, with more respondents saying they had left their job in the previous year or intended to do so in the next 12 months, for mental health or wellbeing reasons. So there has never been more reason to look after the wellbeing of your existing team – to retain your skills and talent – because a happy team equals a productive team.

Is there a one-size-fits-all solution?
In short, no. Most businesses will have a multi-generational and diverse workforce, so there will never be a single solution to workplace wellbeing, as each group will have differing needs and priorities. We encourage organisations to focus support measures on those demographic groups within the workforce which may be more vulnerable to mental health challenges, such as younger employees, neurodivergent employees, ethnic minorities, and those with caring responsibilities outside work. These employees, in particular, can benefit greatly from 121 coaching which provides a psychologically safe space to explore what individual support they need, and to build their personal resilience toolkit that supports them to flourish in both their personal and professional life.
